Definition of Phi

Phi

Phi (ผี) is the name used in Thailand to talk about ghosts. They are divided into two kinds; the Phi dee (ผีดี = good spirits) which are worshiped in the households, and the Phi rai (ผีร้าย = evil spirits) who are feared because they are back on Earth to take revenge on the people who harmed them before they died. Thais use to built in front of houses and buildings, a san phra phum (ศาลพระภูมิ = spirit house). These are small shrines in the shape of Wat (วัด = Thai temple) where they give offerings, burn incense and pray to the Chao thi (เจ้าที่ = animistic spirit of earthly places) to keep away the ghosts from their properties. The best exemples are Colic (directed in 2006 by Patchanon Thammajira), Shutter (directed in 2004 by Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom) and Secret Sunday (directed in 2010 by Saranyu Jiralaksanakul).
