Definition of Shikigami

A shikigami (式 神) is a spirit invoked to serve a follower of Onmyōdō, as familiars in the West. The shikigami are usually invisible, but the Onmyoji from the Heian period which were able to control them, had said that the shikigami vaguely resembled an oni (Japanese kind of troll) the size of a child. Although invisible, the shikigami were, under the orders of onmyoji, able to take human or animal form, but also to possess or charmed a person, or even cause physical injury or death.
